My son turned 8 months last week. And I realized that he has never imitated me. He has never imitated what iv said or done. For example when I say a word to him, he looks at me and watches, but hasn’t ever tried to repeat what I say. Nor have we ever had any kind of back and forth conversation. Another example: when we’re playing on the floor and facing each other, I take a block and bang it on the floor. He will just take my block and put it in his mouth, and move onto the next toy. Also facial expressions, he doesn’t copy any movements I make. If I try to clap my hands in front of him, then put his hands together to see if he would try, he just smiles and moves on. As for affection, he hasn’t ever given me kisses. But that could be personality maybe? On the plus side: he does respond to your smiles with a smile, he’s very happy and laughs a lot, he is interested in his brother and loves our dog, he’s interested in people around him and notices them. He responds to all noise and voices, and is great at responding to his name. He loves exploring his toys, pulling to stand, jumping, and getting into a crawl position, although the doesn’t crawl yet. And recently he has begun trying to put food in my mouth and when I ask him to give me a toy he has, he will give it to me. I should add that he doesn’t ever hold two objects at once. He can only focus on one toy at a time. I think it’s odd. My first would “gather” things in one hand by this time and could recognize things that looked similar. Anyway, Has anyone else’s kids just not gone in for mirroring/copying at this age? He just doesn’t seem to have any kind of reciprocation going on.
