My DD was a late talker. Have you had a read of this on ICan?

hungrycater · 16/03/2020 16:21

No not yet I'll check it thanks. How old was she when she started talking?

3 but in hindsight I was really worried and fobbed off quite a bit by my HV. It’s only much later that I’ve realised it can be a sign of ASD.

I also didn’t know that you can self refer to SLT in most areas at 2.

hungrycater · 16/03/2020 16:37

So how did she start talking at 3? Was it natural or did u take her to see someone

She just started coming out with complete sentences. Another thing o didn't know was a sign of possible ASD.

She did need some SLT at 4 as she was getting done sounds mixed up.

I really would push for a referral to SLT if you have a concern.

hungrycater · 16/03/2020 19:52

I spoke to SLT at a casual drop in chatterbox session that is run near me and they said they wouldn't be concerned just yet

Well that’s reassuring. Did they suggest doing the m-chat test? Did they assess him?

hungrycater · 18/03/2020 17:35

No they won't assess him until he's at least 2.5

No they didn't suggest that chat but I've just looked and it's a test for autism. I'm not concerned about autism. We have a speech delay. An entirely separate issue

Does your child go to any nurseries? I told my health visitor for months I was concerned. He started nursery aged 2and a half and they raised further concerns. They chased up the health visitor for me, plus speech and language therapy, and peadiactrics. He just turned 3 and has been diagnosed with autism. Demand to your HV to be referred. If it wasnt for my sons nursery I would still be in the same boat as you. Speech and language therapy is amazing.

Swankie83 · 19/03/2020 06:52

I'm sorry I just noticed you said you arent concerned about autism. Definately push for speech and language therapy. It's amazing the little things you do helps them to understand and connect the dots xx

He was meant to start nursery in April but not sure that will happen now. If not hopefully he can start at September when he's 2.5
