I posted this in chat but then realised this is probably a better place. Grateful for any advice.
Last week we had our first parents evening for DS who has just started secondary school, year 7. There was a running theme through all the teachers that he needs to focus more and be less distracted. Some of the teachers gave great feedback about his enthusiasm, wanting to answer questions, always putting his hand up etc and his french teacher in particular said how exceptionally well he is doing. Most of them seemed to think he is a nice, bright boy but they all mentioned him being easily distracted and some mentioned him also distracting others.
I think he was like this at primary school too but they got away with it more there and parents evening was only with one teacher. It's slightly more concerning when 8 teachers all mention the focus issue. He is very sociable and he loves to make people laugh. He is still quite immature and I think still getting used to the stricter expectations of behaviour at secondary school.
We sat him down and spoke to him afterwards and he got a bit upset as he felt he'd made us disappointed. He knows he needs to chat less and concentrate more.
My concern is, how do we know if this is something perhaps age related that can be rectified or is it something more i.e ADHD?
No one has ever suggested this to me but having done some reading about it, lack of concentration seems to be the big thing and now I can't put it out of my mind.
Would the teachers say if they thought it was something more than just immaturity?
I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who's had similar experiences. I don't feel I can talk to anyone I know about this.
