My daughter will be 21 months this month.
She can talk and if I say what noise does a certain animal make she will do it. But shes not speaking as much as she should be and I dont know what to do to help. I constantly chat and tell her what things are and point things out we read books and we look at what is on the page. I am thinking of seeing our health vister this month. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas to help. What toys have helped with speech or methods. She can say ta ,mama, dada, daddy, doggy, bubble, yes, no , what's that, is it (meaning where is it), nana for banana. Shes tried to say bird and please.
She knows what noises monkey, horse, duck, lion, dinosaurs and tigers make.
Shes very very stubborn which makes it harder.
Thanks in advance.

At 18M only 8 words are expected, by 21 months around 20 words are expected, this includes animal sounds and any other approximations - from your description she seems to be around that level already.

I just keep having people tell me shes behind and should be talking more. I'm a first time mum so I guess I just worry when I'm getting comments that shes late with talking. Thank you for your reply.

I spent a long time worrying about my 23MO too as I was aware that she was behind SOME kids her age. However she all of a sudden just clicked and I swear she's gone from about 30 words to nearer 300 words now in the space of a few weeks and is
now putting them together frequently too. I feel she's still not at her peak yet either and still has a way to go with really giving it her all and understanding the subtle nuances of a true conversation so I'm expecting her vocab to explode even more in the next few months. Your LO sounds more or less on track and at this age I'd say it really depends on whether anything else is worrying you. I think the big one is understanding. Like I never truly panicked about my LO as she always had incredible receptive language so although I wittled quite a bit about the expressive I kindof knew it'd always come. Does your LO seem to understand simple requests? Can she point body parts out and objects in books etc? And does she seem to play imaginatively? A lot can happen in a few days never mind weeks with kids this age so if you're otherwise happy then personally I'd just leave it now until her 2YO check is due. If she's not saying around 50 words at least by then and/or attempting simple 2 and 3 word sentences then I'd push for further investigation just because it's better to be on the safe side. Www.teachmetotalk.com is a fantastic website and the podcasts have some good explanations of speech aquirement and little games to play to help and it'll stop you driving yourself and your LO nuts doing things that don't work. Most kids DO catch up with each other but on the flipside nobody on a message board can really tell you that there is or isn't anything wrong so just be vigilant especially if there's still issues at age 2 but know that it will probably come in time. And don't listen to the people telling you their kids were reciting shakesphere as soon as they came out of the womb Grin From my experience a lot of people exaggerate or just plain lie and even if they are well ahead there's so many other skills kids are also learning that it's likely your LO is focussing on something else for a bit.

She does understand things. Like I can say where is your nose and she will touch it. Where is the mouse and she will point at it (in those that's not my books) I can say let's go get dressed and she will run to the door. She didnt say her first word until she was about 13 months everyone kept asking of shed spoken yet. Now its oh well shes a bit behind it will be ok. Just makes me worry but then again everything makes me worry. Thank you so much with your reply I will deffinaly check out the website as well :) x
