13.5 month old not walking yet

My DD is bright and active and relatively sturdy on her feet, but rarely stands without holding only anything and hasn't started walking yet. She walks if we hold her hands and walk with her.

Just starting to get worried as everyone says girls are quicker but four of the babies from my early maternity leave classes are already walking very well and they're younger than her.

Can anyone share their experiences please?

DS1 stood and walked for the first time on the same day... he was 16m old.

No doctor will worry until 18m, and even then some don't get up and walk til later than that.

The problem is comparison - and there's always a kid that does stuff before yours!

My daughter didn't really walk properly til 13MO. She's 22MO now and runs, jumps, climbs and has just started to become quite confident on a balance bike. She can also climb apparatus at gymnastics that kids twice her age struggle with and can walk across a beam unaided. It means nothing and it's far too young to be worried as anything up to 18MO is normal. Also crawling and tummy time has been shown to have massive benefits for their overall development so don't rush her. Xx

My DS1 didn't walk until 18, nearly 19 months! My other DC is 12 months and no sign of walking yet, he's pulling to stand but that's it.

Is your DD cruising? My S1 cruised for MONTHS before he walked, about 3-4 months, but some babies will take much less time than that.

Don't worry.

Hi Op!

Please don't worry. My daughter didnt start crawling until 8 months and finally walked at 16. I had many people questioning her development but she was totally fine in everything else, right 'on time' with her other milestones. I genuinely just think it was a confidence/couldn't be bothered thing.
She is now 2.5 and runs around, jumps etc with no issue! Kids develop at their own pace so don't let anyone stress you. Take your child to the doctor to confirm there is no foot/limb related issue so you know you have checked it out for peace of mind, and then relax! Your kiddo will walk soon enough.

What's cruising? Is that using things to help her walk?

She's non stop walking along furniture and walls.

Don't worry, 13 months is not at all late to start walking. Between my two kids and others we know, it seems to happen anywhere between 10 - 18 months.

13 months is still tiny. There’s loads that aren’t walking at 13 months. Ds1 was nearly 16 months and I was getting a bit worried, mainly because my parents in law were calling pretty much every day asking if he was walking yet and why not and what was wrong with him. He did it in his own time and within a week of walking he was indistinguishable from those who were walking at 10 months. Ds2 is nearly 15 months and not walking yet and I am not worried at all.

My 18mo didn't walk until he was 16 months and now he sprints everywhere!

crazychemist · 10/03/2020 17:11

If she’s cruising everywhere, it could just be a temperament thing - my DD is naturally very cautious. She always has been, so doesn’t do things unless she’s confident about it. It isn’t holding her back at all. Perhaps your DD is the same? At 3.5, my DD can do everything you’d expect, but is still extremely cautious and takes her time. She’s got great balance and coordination though.

Rugbymumof2 · 10/03/2020 18:46

DD1 walked just after 12m, DD2 walked at 16m but had a very efficient one knee one foot crawl/shuffle never really crawled as such.
My nieces both walked around 9m!

Kids are all very different, it will happen when it's time for them.

DS took what seemed like forever to make the transitition to walking because he was so fast at crawling. He cruised (pulled himself around the furniture) for months, then took his first steps but didn't walk as a primary mode of transport for another couple of months. Now it looks weird when he crawls!

13.5 months is still young to not be walking, she'll get there.

123Dancewithme · 16/03/2020 00:16

My DS never crawled but walked at 12 months. My best friend’s DS who is the same age crawled until 18 months and then suddenly started walking. They’re all so different.
