15 month old throws shapes and tantrum when loading into car seat

Sorry for another post so quick after my teething one, but i've only just discovered mumsnet!

My daughter is 15 months old and over the last 2 weeks she has started becoming very difficult to get in her car seat. As soon as I she gets near the car seat she throws a shape and arches her back. It took me 10 minutes today to get her into the car and it was very stressful. I don't want to hurt her by forcing her in, but she needs to go in so what can I do??????

Have an incentive for her to get in (we have had this and have learnt by experience) - eg, a drink, a box of raisins, chocolate, whatever you think will do it!! HTH

Tricky one... this may help. Before you get to the car, hold her up in a sitting position with her knees near her chest. Don't allow her to "unbend" herself up until she is strapped in. A week of practice and she will stop fighting it.

Do not bribe - always works against you in long run - you will end up giving her stuff for things which you expect her to do as a matter of course - so when you go to things like dentist the smaller bribes no longer work...

Force may be the only option at times - you could try reason, but she may just be doing it for the reaction....

Make the belt as bis as it will go. Hold child in place with left hand whilst throwing shape. Using advanced prehensile grip, manipulate belt fastener in place. Tighten belt slowly and gently to reverse said thrown shape.

Excuse my ignorance but... what is an advanced prehensil grip? do you have diagram?

Also - the throwing shapes thing - is that body shapes or like bricks. If its bricks then would def confiscate or give once in seat!

lol, sorry, throwing a shape was not meant litterally. I meant by daughter arches her back and makes a shape like a banana. Once shes got the move locked in place, not even my husband can get her place. Would be easier if you could strap them in chest first, then her banana shape would be useful.

Thanks for advice, I think the getting her into the featal position then sticking her in the seat would probably work best.

Completely agree with ottoandflash - zero tolerance is the best option. There are areas where small people can muck about and areas where it's just way too dangerous. I think she'll sense that you mean business after a while. Just try to allow yourself a bit of extra time when you're leaving the house. MUCH sympathy - I hate having to deal with this sort of monkey business. One of my worst parental experiences ever was in the peeing rain outside a south london museum with dd2 throwing multiple said shapes, me getting my arse drenched as i tried to manhandle her in and then dd1 biting dd2's finger incredibly hard in an attempt to shut her up. I swore then cried. Not very edifying...
