Gaviscon and colief ??

Hi, just wondered if anyone has used both gaviscon and colief ? I have a 9 week old baby who is getting more and more unsettled. Dr and hv said he has colic. Used to be on comfort milk as he was sick all the time, very unsettled and crying all the time like all day and night . Eventually put him back on normal milk with gaviscon after seeing the doctor again, he is being sick less but still cries all the time, the nights are getting worse and worse he wakes for a bottle then cries for about 4 hours after Ana cannot settle him. Just wondering if he may have a problem with lactose , he's very windy, cries, unsettled which is some of the symptoms and read that colief can help but not sure if I can add tbay to the milk as well as gaviscon

It's highly unlikely to be lactose as lactose allergy in babies is extremely rare. It could very well be the proteins in the milk though. Have a read of this on Cow's Milk Protein Allergy from allergy UK and see if you think your LO has any of the symptoms.

I did mention that to the dr and the hv they both said they don't think it's a cows milk allergy as he doesn't have any rashes or hives etc and does take his bottles

It’s very odd that the GP and HV both think you have to have hives and rashes to have CMPA, I have neither yet there’s no doubt I have it.

Hi my DD was on gaviscon and colief. When they put my DD on gaviscon it stopped the vomiting but she was still crying all the time after a bottle, arching her back, wriggle while having a bottle and still unsettled. They put her in lanzaprosol which was for silent reflux and it worked. I would go back to your doctors and ask to try something on top of gaviscon (it’s not to replace gaviscon).

I just have no idea what to do anymore I feel like I'm changing his milk and medication all of the time it's upsetting him. Hv told me to put him on lactose free milk so I did there was no change and he ended up constipated so now back on original milk with gaviscon but he's now being sick more and fussing on bottles and still just cries constantly

@Babs5693 so was the lanzaprosol instead of the gaviscon ? And you used that with colief as well? My hv has told me to take him off gaviscon and try the colief but I don't want to do that as without gaviscon he's sick absolutely loads

@JiltedJohnsJulie yeah I seen the hv again yesterday and she definitely ruled that out said he didn't have enough of the symptoms also said he would be a very ill baby if that was the case

Did you read the link that I posted on CMPA? Are any of the symptoms similar?

If it’s not CMPA it sounds like LO May have reflux, in which case they need better meds than just Gaviscon. I’d go back to the GO today and say that you are really struggling, that the Gaviscon isn’t working and is there anything else they can prescribe?

Babs5693 · 21/02/2020 19:09

I wouldn’t take him off gaviscon, the lanzaprosol is as well as gaviscon, gaviscon stops them or helps them to be sick less as it thickens up the milk but they sometimes need another medication as well as gaviscon so I would ask for something on top. My DD had colic but I didn’t use the colief for that reason I used it to help constipation as it helps them to poo. Side effects to gaviscon is constipation, we was told off special care to give her one pre made formula a day to help with constipation and it worked, we still do this now at 8 months.

@JiltedJohnsJulie yeah I did read the link you sent me thank you . He has about 4 of the systems excessive crying , vomiting, but he he drinks his bottles . Just afterwards he's sick and grunts and groans for a very long time

The difficulty is st this age is that tongue tie, reflux and CMPA all have very similar symptoms and it’s just a case of ruling each one out Smile

My little girl was colicly from newborn until 8 months old, was very hard work. Comfort milk didnt help but eventually Hipp Organic was a winner with Dr Browns bottles and Colief 1 or 2 drops in each feed - wish you lots of luck 😊 xx

@JiltedJohnsJulie hi, my little one was put on other medication for reflux but that made him worse so back on gaviscon
He's seen a paediatrician who has prescribed him milk Incase he does have a CMPA but he's not taking bottles any better, worse actually I can only get about 3oz down him and takes about an hour. If he does have a CMPA should he take his feeds better straight away or can it take time?
