2 Year Old With Ear Infection - Can't Stop Crying

Hi. I'm not really sure where to post this, but here goes.

Our 2 year old had a nasty virus for a week. Partner had it too - pains in legs, swollen glands, sore throat, fever etc. I had the painful legs and a sore throat, but don't know if I had a milder version as I'm pregnant and had a flu jab.

Anyway, parent took son to the docs on Thursday. He said his glands are swollen, throat and inner ears are inflamed, but his body is basically doing what it should so no need for antibiotics.

His fever has gone, but I've been alternating calpol and nurofen. It's just I think he's in a lot of pain with his ears or something (he hadn't learned to talk enough to tell me what's hurting him). I just don't know what to do really. Nurofen does seem to help but as soon as that wears off he's whimpering again. He isn't himself at all - I'm sure he's in agony, but I don't know what else to do. Calpol doesn't seem to be doing much at all.

Can anyone help?

Try putting a few drops of warm olive oil in his ear to soothe the pain. You can hit the olive oil up in the microwave but be very careful that it doesn't get too hot. Cover ear the ear with a piece of cotton ball. The warm towel also helps.

@fairybaby Thank you. He's gone to sleep now so hopefully some of it is tiredness.

Update just in case it happens to anyone else. Ended up phoning 111 as he woke up and was inconsolable. They sent us up to the hospital to see out of hours GP at 10pm (didn't know there was such a thing). They prescribed antibiotics which we picked up from the 24 chemist. He had one dose before bed and when he woke up late this morning was much more like his usual self. Phew!
