movements of newborn

5 week old newborn..

lots of times rolls his eyes, crosses his eyes, tucks his chin in and ignores any eye contact, twists and contorts his body and face...how do i know these are normal body movements or if something is wrong??

i am guessing they are part and parcel of ongoing digestive discomfort..but they happen so often how do I know it is all normal and not something wrong?

anywhere i can find out?

Take him to your GP/HV but sounds normal. Could be colic? Is he crying/in pain or just making odd movements?

I swapped to Aptamil after MAJOR issues with SMA and never looked back.

TBH, it sounds normal but I would go to your GP to put your mind at rest. So hard to tell without seeing him.

bumbly your baby sounds so normal, on so many of your threads, bless him . Newborns are a bit of a law unto themseleves, no hard and fast yes or no's. Doubts are normal but if you are really worried ask your hv or gp to do a thorough check (as he'll probably get at his 6 week check anyway) and refer him if needs be to a paediatrician. tbh you sound so anxious that I'm concerned you may be missing out on enjoying him as he is now.

it is the normal day to day baby that

They make lots of twitchy movements & find it a bit strange having all that space! But if you are concerned it's trapped wind you can always try Infacol (put in mouth using the supplied dropper) which produces orange flavoured burps or Dentinox (put in milk) which helps bring wind up.

i find that mumsnet is so much better than my gp who kept answering the phone during my appointment and ignored all my questions

my hv seems to also not really care

Bumbly - are you particularly anxious? I only ask cos you do sound it. Is there a reason you are anxious?

Regarding the eye contact, at 5w they can only really see about a foot in front of them (hence the crossed eyes) and respond best to silly noises and cooing voices. Dd was transfixed from the word go, but ds really took his time doing this and couldn't really focus for very long.

If he's twitchy, it can cue a range of things: he might be windy so just try resting him on your chest and rubbing his back gently, the warmth and movement should soothe him. It might be that he's passing wind, which can be a bit uncomfortable since it's something he's just learning how to do. And sometimes they get a bit like this when they are tired and will go off 5 mins later.

Don't worry you'll soon learn his cues and this stage passes by about 12-15 weeks but he sounds perfectly normal and lovely

Bumbly - have just read some of your past threads. You sound quite low actually. Have you considered that you may have PND? Bit concerned about you worrying so much.

Your LO sounds SO perfect and normal. Please try and enjoy him more.

Know exactly what you mean. I wasn't mumsy in the least (now contemplating no 3!) and no one else amongst family/friends had children & we'd just moved to a new part of the country. But take heart since you've dipped your toe in the water you'll probably find you've started a stampede and your friends will all be coming to you for advice soon.

It can be quite nervy since babies don't come with instructions and I certainly hadn't been round little children either so it was all really quite stressful. I knew the theory having read the books but even holding ds1 felt strange. It took me quite a while to learn to relax with him. But as long as he's been given milk, winded, has his nappy changed and is given cuddles then he is thriving. No 2 by comparison has been a breeze.

But ask away or pop in for a chat, we've all been there, promise!
