3 year old who won't go out

Hi, I've posted before over my 3 year old. He is currently on the asd pathway - since sept. For roughly 3 months now (could be longer tbh) it is a totally nightmare trying to get him out the house, even when he sees his coat/jacket he starts to cry/flip/run off. My son had a speech delay so he is unable to tell me why he doesn't want to leave the house. On most occasions I just have to pick him up to leave - he will flip out for a good couple of minutes then he is fine, happy to be out. I don't understand what is going on, he used to love being outside I could never get him in. Is this normal 3 year old behaviour? I feel absolutely terrible as I shouted at him today because he wouldn't come out (my mums birthday I wanted to see her) i will admit, it stresses me out badly. I have tried making it in to a game, singing and dancing to get him out but it doesn't always work. Sorry for the long post

My DS is 2, isn't speaking yet and we aren't sure if he may have a receptive language delay too. Not quite the same, but my DS prone to 'meltdowns' when we leave places. What I've found really helpful, is a simple communication book, with photos. Then I try to explain to him where we're going and show him pictures - it's helped, although there are still occasions where he doesn't want to go out etc.

I've included a picture of me, daddy, our dogs, grandparents, our house, the park, his key worker at nursery (it was their idea).

Not sure if it will be any help for you, but I thought I'd share the idea.

That sounds like a great idea thank you very much, I will give that a try. Much appreciated

agree with dinosauraus, we did something similar with my non-verbal 3 year old and it helped no end. (Was recommended by a support worker at our local Sure Start centre, as it was then.) Also helped in terms of bringing his language comprehension too - bonus side effect.

Thank you, I am yet to try this as he is sick at the moment with a viral infection so hopefully once he's better we can give it a whirl and hope for the best
