Shy or anxious?

Couldn't put 2 different subjects into one post so here's another.
My DS 18 months old is a happy little man in house and fine with us. As soon as we set foot out of the house it's trouble!!
Strangers can't get close or say Hi (he cries) family members he hasn't seen for a while he starts crying, into a store which could be a bit busy: crying. Other mums at playgroups he sees and he starts crying (while he tries to bite other kids) In short: he cries. A lot.

We haven't had any separation anxiety with him at all and he wouldn't bat an eye if he's in one room playing and me cooking in the kitchen. I really start to dread going out or other people their houses. It often ends up with me putting on a song on my phone for him because he is SO upset that his toys (that I bring along) don't calm him and he literally tries to get out of the room or away from the people that are there. I feel really horrible about this and have no idea how to help our DS. We go out to 2 play groups a week and one smaller get together for Sn children which he quite likes due to the low lights and only 3 or 4 other children present there with their mums (calm atmosphere too)
Any ideas anyone how to deal with this? thanks Flowers
