Should we be concerned with 2 year old?

A close family member has a beautiful little girl, aged 26 months. She's fairly quiet anyway and does say quite a few words but seems shy about saying them in front of people. She says over 50 words and I've heard her sing along to songs on TV. But she doesn't ask for things or make sentences. She's very bright and exceeds everything in terms of gross motor/fine motor but it's just the social side of things. Do you think she's just shy or is there a problem? I just wondered if anyone else had experienced this. I don't want to make a big deal out of it and let my relatives cause unnecessary stress to her. Any advice is much appreciated :)

I think they should be putting 2 words together at 2 but not usually making whole sentences. As long as there is progression then I wouldn’t worry. Is there a two year check in your area? I’m sure the parents are on to it.

Although it’s not exact science. My 25m old has lots of words and certainly 2 or 3 words but lots of his peers are having whole sentences - the HV said he was fine if there was progression.

Thanks for your reply. I've heard her say "daddy go" and "thank you" but I'm not sure she uses them in the right context but does that matter I'm not sure?

It doesn't sound concerning at all in my opinion, just like adults, by two years old they will already have a personality and some toddlers will be extrovert (loud and in your face) and others introvert (quiet and more to themselves) - both set of toddlers will require some encouragement to try to step to the side that they are not comfortable with.

Thank you! Her parents don't really want to kick up a fuss either if it's nothing. They actually asked me to post this for them. She doesn't really wave or point much but she points to things she wants and to name body parts/things in books and can say numbers and some colours too. I guess it's such a grey area!
