Shyness

My ds is almost 4 and is so shy. He has been going to a pre school for almost a year and still barely talks to the teachers. Whenever someone other than me, his dad or his grandparents talk to him he looks down and refuses to talk. I worry about how he will be when he starts school.

Does anyone have any advice about how to build his confidence? Has anyone had a child like this and have they been okay at school?

Following, and you have my sympathies as my 3.5 year old DD is very similar. I ask her if she played with anyone at preschool and she says no. When other children say hello to her she hides behind me! I worry she will have no friends at this rate...(although she seems perfectly happy and not upset by not playing with others).
