5 year old still wets the bed

He's been wearing night nappies since he was potty trained at 3yo. And we've been trying everything to get him out of them. We've stopped giving him water/drinks after 6.30pm and we'll take him to the toilet the very last minute before bed but if he's not wearing a pad more often than not he'll wet the bed. He's just turned 5 and I feel he's getting a bit too old for this. Am I right? Or should I just let him take his time? Has anyone got any advice or strategies.
Incidentally, if he does wet the bed me and DP play it down and don't make "thing" of it, we just say accidents happen and if his pull ups are dry in the morning we congratulate him.
Thanks in advance

Have you tried taking him just before you go to bed? We did this with DD til she was about 6.

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 08/08/2019 17:39

Yes, we do this too. And he will still wets himself. Was your DD still wetting herself in the night at 5 boom or were you just taking extra precautionary measures? Thanks

No, she was night trained at about 2.5 but lifted her til 5/6 just coz it worked for us.

Pretty sure it's very normal for boys to not be dry at night for longer. My friends lad is nearly 5 and still in pull ups.

Yes, I've heard the same about boys. I'll try not to stress too much.
Thanks Smile

Hi there!

Mum of 3 boys here. My DS1 was dry by 26 months, my DS2 not until he was almost 6. All kids are different, so don’t stress to much. We did same with DS2 about limiting drinks etc. My nephew is 9 and still wets the bed once or twice a week. I read that the body is supposed to produce a hormone at night that slows down urine production, and sometimes for whatever reason this doesn’t happen until later with some kids. Or is it possible he’s just a really heavy sleeper, as that’s what it is with my nephew?

Either way, for now just keep doing good what your doing. Between 5-6 is when our DS2 would wet every 3-4 nights and the closer he got to 6 the less frequent this became.

*doing what you’re doing

Perfectly normal. It’s hormonal and they all develop correct level of the hormone needed at different ages. My DS2 was eight before he was dry at night. We ended up trying a bed wetting alarm and he was dry within 2 weeks over night - we were advised by Paediatrician

Thanks for these reassuring posts Myheart and Lara.
My DS is a very heavy sleeper and me and DP wondered if this would be a factor.
I didn't consider hormones would be an issue I need to do proper research and again this has reassured as there's nothing that can be done.
Yes, I won't stress anymore and see how we get on.
Thanks for all your replies Smile
