So wish me luck. He is (i) very opinionated (not misbehaved - but that's required a lot of effort; and (ii) not that enthused about going to bed at the best of times.

A sense several sleepness nights ahead.

Suggestions welcomed! It's Day 1, so I haven't screwed it up yet.

Do you read to him in bed?

If you do - buy a CD player and some story CDs. Tell him to lay in bed and the man/lady will keep reading him stories.

I found the transition to a bed to be ok. My dd was 14 months so I suppose a lot less independent than your ds. Books, stories, a nightlight (well that thing you plug in to the socket) and always taking her straight back to bed if she gets up works for us.

Good luck.

Good luck Legal, I was lucky and unlucky my ds (9 today lol) was 8 months old when he came through bottom of cot as he was a lump lolol. So he went into a normal bed then, I not had any probs since. Mind you I had a lot of sleepless nights through worry the first month or so.
