...
(a) does a baby become a toddler?
(b) a toddler become a child?

Any other young stages I have missed?

baby to toddler - 2.5

toddler to child - 4

TheArmadillo · 25/07/2007 21:18

baby technically becomes a toddler when they start to walk don't they? (i.e. toddle)

bozza · 25/07/2007 21:20

baby to toddler around 12-18 months
toddler to child around 3-4

Don't really think of DD as a toddler and she is only 3. But is loosing that chubbiness.

All subjective though.

Hulababy · 25/07/2007 21:20

TheArmadillo - but do they? DD walked at 10 months, but isn't that too old to be called a toddler. Friend's DD walked at 8.5 months - surely not a toddler then?

why hula?

southeastastra · 25/07/2007 21:20

i don't understand (b)
a baby is a child

Hulababy · 25/07/2007 21:21

Just curious. Was looking through some old baby books I had from when DD was little, and none of them say when it is. Just woondered what people thought.

Also a tad bored and can't face packing!

Me to DD1(6) today about DD2(4)
'I hate it when one of my babies is poorly'

DD1 'Mum, do we wear nappies?'
me 'No'
DD1 'Mum, do we go waa waa waa?'
me 'No'
DD1 'Mum, do we eat gloop?'
me 'No'
DD1 'well then we aren't your babies!!'

but they are

I always think toddlerdom starts around 18 months and ends about a year or 18 months later, ie 2.5 to 3 years.

TheArmadillo · 25/07/2007 21:25

My friend's dd walked at 9months so I know what you mean, it is a bit wierd but I think that is the definition of the word or at least the origin.

Defined by the American Heritage dictionary, toddler means "One who toddles. Especially a young child learning to walk". They then give an (estimated) age range of between 1 & 3yo.

Preschooler I think defines more accurately what people tend to use toddler to mean (or what I use it to mean anyway).

TheArmadillo · 25/07/2007 21:25

And yes I know I am being unnecessarily pedantic about this

ScaryHairy · 25/07/2007 21:30

My baby is a toddler (sob) and she is 13 months. It's the walking about and the refusal to let me feed her/brush her hair/ anything which makes her less independent.

[She does still collapse on me for a cuddle when she's tired, though, so all is not lost]
