10 year old sleep and "macro" worries

Looking for suggestions to help my ten year old son sleep please. He is having difficulty sleeping because "lots of things keep my mind busy". He is variously worried about things he can't control, such as:

  • plastic in the ocean
  • the world running out of food
  • a meteor hitting the earth
  • burglars coming into his room
  • Donald Trump starting a nuclear war
  • Brexit
  • getting a place at secondary school (he will go to our local school, for which we are well within catchment)

We talk about all of these things with him, but it takes him ages to fall asleep every night as a result of his worries. We have tried stories, meditation etc. I wish I knew how to help him live alongside these "macro" worries. Any experience or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

God....I do think this sort of climate gets the anxious kids more. MY DD is also worried about the environment to a terrible degree.

I find that physical exercise helps DD as does the distraction of a pet. Can you get him a kitten or something?
