How many words should baby be saying? If any?

I don’t think there is a set number. My DS didn’t say his first word until 14 months, my friends baby not until 18 months (but both were babbling long before this and understood many words and concepts). Some babies may say first words much earlier. My understanding is receptive language and use of gestures are much more important at 12 months.

They're not expected to be saying words at 12 months, just to be starting to understand words.

The talking point website is one the NHS refers to in their own development guide and has really good, evidence based advice about speech development.
