Biting self, should I be concerned

Ds has always been difficult to handle. He was very violent when upset and would sometimes run to bite me for apparently no reason He is now 3.5yo and has improved lots. Still has the odd tantrum but overall good.

My worry is that if he is told off or frustrated he will bite his arm/slap himself round the face. Occasionally he will do it when I'm not there. Nursery aren't concerned as they see it as attention seeking and advise to ignore It, which I do. I just worry as some weeks he's got little bruises from where he has bitten. Just wanting some reassurance that it's just a phase!

I've attached a photo to show one of his bite marks the following day. The biting has been going on for the last year and I'd hoped he would have grown out of it by now.
