Toddler hates swimming: can anyone help?

I took DD (who will be 2 in 2 weeks) swimming today for the first time. (I didn't feel up to it when she was tiny, then the idea of doing it with an unsteady small toddler seemed daunting, then it was cold, hence not doing it before. Obviously I do now regret that.)She has been talking lots about swimming pools and was excited this morning when I told her what we were doing, so I thought it would go down well. It didn't. I think we lasted 90 seconds in there before her saying 'want to get out' turned into shouting. Does anyone have any tips for helping her to get more comfortable in the water? She's perfectly happy in the bath and always pours water in her face in the bath, so I don't think it's a sensory thing. Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Wait until she is older is best thing to do. She'll know what she wants more then too. Don't worry just because she didn't like it today doesn't mean she will grow up not being able to swim. Don't put yourself through the stress, take her again in a few months and see if any change

Can you go to a pool that has a small heated toddler pool?

Hi TigerQuoll, that's what we did. Although it was less warm than I had anticipated. Maybe she needs more of a wetsuit. Also, it only occurred to me after the event that the chlorine could be a bit uncomfortable on her skin as she has quite sensitive skin. NoKnit, I think you're right. I'll wait a couple of months and try again when we feel up for it.

A paddling pool? But it’s a bit cold for that!
Maybe the pool was just too big?
