Freaking out over socks

Hello
Any help or advice on this would be so very welcome.
I have a 4 year old boy, he’s bright and 80% of the time pretty well behaved for a typical 4 year old. However a couple of months ago started to really freak out over putting socks on, crying and screaming saying “they are on wrong”.
It’s getting to the point where he is hyperventilating over this and stopping him joining in with activities (this happened at a birthday party).
Any ideas how to overcome this? It’s is hopefully a phase that will soon pass but if anyone has been through something similar and could help that would be fab.
Thank you!!

My DD2 has AS and socks were the source of daily meltdowns before school. I eventually discovered seamless socks like these. We still have school issues but the socks definitely made our mornings easier.

You're welcome.

Other things that sometimes helped (if nothing else was going wrong and she wasn't too stressed) were turning her socks inside out, wearing socks that were too big and rubbing them in my hands first so they felt as if they had already been worn.
