Hi everyone, my son is 3 (4 in August) and will be going into reception this year. When it comes to listening and doing as I say it’s a big NO NO. I can tell him to do something over 10 times and he will completely ignore it. He’s constantly on the go and won’t sit still longer than 10 minutes so this has made it difficult to do any sit down activities with him. His speech isn’t the best and most the time it’s only me that can understand what he’s saying/asking for. He doesn’t know shapes, numbers, and struggles with colours as well.. I’d love to be able to sit with him and do different activities but he never listens or just throws a tantrum whenever I ask him to do something like this. If anyone’s got any tips or ideas that would be great! Thanks

When you say that he does not follow instructions even after telling him 10 times do you think it's because he is being stubborn or because maybe he truly cannot understand what you are asking of him? The reason why I ask is because you seem to imply that he has delays in expressive language and cognitive thinking (typically, counting / shapes / colours starts to emerge from around 2 years old) I wonder if this also extends to receptive language and if so it would probably be asking too much of him to conform to instruction if he is unable to understand.
