Anyone else watch this last night? Was anyone else left with the feeling that the experiments they do are trivial and random and that they only show the ones that work? I suppose I want it to be a straightforward developmental show (probably selfishly as dd is the same age as the kids on it), but I always find it disappointing.

I used to hide sometimes when Doctor Who was on. I love flying saucers, still buy them.

PamT · 23/08/2002 16:00

I never had a space hopper but I can remember searching every toy shop when we went for a weekend in London for a 'Squirmel'. It was a fuzzy worm on an invisible string which you could run through your fingers to make it look like it was alive. I also had a tiny tears and Tippy Tumbles but I'm sure we never had as many toys as my kids seem to have now. We also used to play Frustration, Kerplunk and Mousetrap.

Our treat for the week would be a Mars bar cut into thin slices and shared out on a sunday afternoon.

crystaltips · 23/08/2002 16:29

Lucy123 - Duran Duran - You must be a young thing !

Thumper - I remember Bunty and June !

My forst single I ever bought was The Rubettes (Hee Hee) I was a real Sweet fan! Who was that guy with the long blond hair.
I remember dreaming of the Bay City Rollers and wishing that I could be as coo,as Suzi Quattro

Oh yes - and Spangles sweets were the best !

crystaltips · 23/08/2002 16:30

Few typos there - but perhaps you got the idea!

aloha · 23/08/2002 18:49

Pam T, that's incredible, I thought we were the only household in the world which cut a mars into thin slices for sunday afternoons! Blimey. You can't imagine a modern family putting up with that, can you?

bayleaf · 23/08/2002 18:50

oh yes - Old English flavoured spangles were my favourites. Which Bay City Roller did you like - I started off on Eric but transfered to Woody later on ( a more sophisticated choice??!!)
Did have bright pink hot pants but was never allowed to have any tartan cut off trousers -not fair!

SueDonim · 23/08/2002 18:57

What goes around comes around (oops, bad pun!!) as my 15yr old DD received a space hopper from a friend for her birthday recently. It's PINK, though!!

crystaltips · 23/08/2002 19:22

bayleaf,

Had a Bay City Roller T shirt AND scarf ... but alas not Tartan trews

I idolised Eric and like you swapped ! My fickle tastes then switched to Les ( ooops - say it quietly ! )

Knew all the words though ! Bye Bye Baby and Shang-a-lang were my TOP HITS

aloha · 23/08/2002 19:44

I liked Eric too. Shame they all turned out to be so appalling. I had lilac hotpants and a purple t-shirt and lilac and purple cork wedges - at primary school. So much for my stand on kids in adult clothing, eh?

PamT · 23/08/2002 20:13

"B-A-Y CI-T-Y R-O-double-L-E-R-S - Bay City Rollers are the best!" But who had the white socks with tartan tops and pictures of the lads on the side?

A few years on, I was at High School during the new romantic/Duran Duran era and have one of those 3foot long photos with the whole school on The hairstyles are amazing - loads of A-symetric fringes and black eyeliner. I still love the music from the 80s though.

emsiewill · 23/08/2002 20:22

B-A-Y, B-A-Y, B-A-Y-C-I-T-Y
With an R-O-double-L-E-R-S
Bay City Rollers are a mess.
They can't sing, they can't dance
All they do is WET THEIR PANTS
With a R-O-double-L-E-R-S
Bay City Rollers are a mess

Ems · 23/08/2002 20:31

Oh PamT, those socks! I was never allowed them, the ones with the face down the sides, they werent cotton I think was the reason!! I wanted them SOOOOO badly!

I remember singing that song EVERY lunchtime.

jenny2998 · 23/08/2002 20:36

Haven't had the time to read the messages all the way through, but I'm with Aloha.

I think the programme is simplifying for its audience, but that also makes it much more approachable for many.

As for everyone taking it as an attack on their parenting skills - surely all it's doing is pointing out the situation from tyhe child's viewpoint. My feeling is that much of the trouble with society is that we're too concerned with our own needs and losing touch with the needs of the children. Surely it's better to be aware of the needs of our children so we can make an effort to change the damaging behaviour rather than carrying on regardless and only discovering the damage that is being done when it's too late?

jenny2998 · 23/08/2002 20:39

Lol, I see I'm the only one still talking about the programme...

aloha · 23/08/2002 20:55

Hi Jenny, v flattered that you think I'm talking sense, but, more importantly, which Blue Peter presenters do you remember

thumper · 23/08/2002 21:07

Bay City Rollers. Aah. I was allowed just one of their albums (oops L.P.) which my sixteen year old brother bought for me with his first weeks wages from his holiday job on a building site. I remember being with him on the bus coming back from town hugging the l.p. and thinking he was the best person in the whole wide world. Didnt last long of course! Does anyone remember the one, with all their likes and dislikes on the inner cover. Favourite drinks - along the lines of 'milk' 'coke' 'dandelion and burdock (sp?) Yeah, right. Believed it at the time of course. I could never understand why I was not allowed any of the clothes. I mean, I'm SCOTTISH!!

thumper · 23/08/2002 21:11

Ooh, I'm getting carried away now, first single bought for me by mum, Tiger Feet by Mud. First single bought by myself (and this is sad) 'There's a whole lot of loving going on in the World'. Can't remember who sang it though, and now I can't get the b..... tune out of my head. Think it ended up being in a coffee commercial. Jenny2998, I suppose we need to start a new memories thread and get back to the original point. Sorry.

crystaltips · 23/08/2002 21:14

ABBA !

Now they were the business!

Dancing Queen ! In the ktchen with my mum's wooden spoon as a microphone!

Westlife come out and do a cover version and I can re-live my youth all over again !!
DD is soooo impressed that I know the words!

Scuba · 23/08/2002 23:38

Gosh someone else bought the Rubettes. Blonde chap out of Sweet is Brian Conley and it might have been the New Seekers for 'Whole lotta lovin goin on...' If you think remembering the tune is bad I remember the lyrics. I could find out - I know I've got the single somewhere (oh the shame). Did anyone ever try to sing Denise Williams song 'Free' she hit two notes so high that if you tried to copy you ended up losing your voice.

sjs · 24/08/2002 06:51

Wow - I love this thread - what memories you are all stirring up! I had totally forgotten about my Pippa doll and The Tomorrow People.

My first pop idol was David Cassidy. (I had a badge I was very proud of... ) and then I moved onto the Bay City Rollers too - had posters up on my walls of them and took huge amount of teasing from my 3 older brothers about it. I still remember saying during one bout of mocking that "I'll always love the Bay City Rollers!!!" Then we moved house a few months later I never bothered to put the posters up in my new bedroom!!

I think I had moved onto a love affair with Starsky and Hutch and was allowed to stay up to watch it. What was that song that David Soul sang - I used to play it over and over on my record player, but can't for the life of me remember what it was now! (Arggh - it's driving me mad, help me out here!)

The first record I ever bought was " January " by Pilot! Whatever happened to them? Were they a one hit wonder?

I never had a space hopper but always wanted one - that and a pogo stick - But I had roller skates that attached onto the bottom of shoes and I thought they were cool.

batey · 24/08/2002 06:59

O.K. I'll bite the bullet and start a Memories thread. You'd better all come with me or I'll feel a right pranny!

jenny2998 · 24/08/2002 20:26

Oh, all right then, bit too young for the Bay City Rollers but my Blue Peter presenters were Simon Groom, Peter Duncan (who I thought was very lovely - oh the shame) Janet Ellis, Sarah Greene, and then the next lot - John Leslie, Karon Keating, Mark Curry...

batey · 24/08/2002 20:39

Jenny 2998, we've gone to the "Memories "thread, see below! See you there!?

SimonHoward · 28/08/2002 14:42

Jenny2998 you are making me feel old.

The rest of you are making me feel young though.

CAM · 28/08/2002 18:53

cheeky!
