I am worried about my (very nearly) 14 month old and am not sure whether I need to ask for any help at this stage.
Physically, he can't stand alone or walk. He can push his walker though. He was seeing a physio as he initially couldn't lift his head but we have been discharged as he has caught up. He is always the last in our NCT group to roll, crawl, cruise etc. Anyway, physically I think he is still within the expected range. I just mention this because sometimes when people say their child is behind with something it's because he is concentrating on learning another new skill. Which isn't the case here!
His fine motor skills seem good he can pick small objects, play with balls etc.
Anyway, my worry is he doesn't communicate as he should.
He does:-
- clap if someone else does or to cheer himself on
- sometimes waves bye bye (this is only recent)
- initiate peek a boo. This is his favourite thing to do.
- smile
- have very good eye contact but scarily so even with strangers.
He doesn't:-
- say any words. Just mama dada etc babble but doesn't mean mummy daddy.
- point
- understand commands
If he wants food or drink he just cries. He can't communicate his needs.
He can hear me but doesn't listen. If I try to sit down with him and point at things in a book he just throws it around or keeps turning the pages. If I try to build a tower with him if he can't do it he throws himself on the floor and wails in frustration although he is generally very placid and chilled.
If I try to sit with him and talk to him about something or point at his cup for example so he can learn the word cup he just crawls off and finds the drawers that he wants to open and close or doors to open and close or ball to throw around. Nothing is repetitive or orderly. More destructive! It is more him being hyper and not concentrating.
Anyway, sorry for the long post. I had a very stressful pregnancy and difficult time bonding initially and always worry that had some impact.
