ds (10 months) has started doing this sometimes in his cot and against wall during the day...

he does it quite gently, not enough to hurt just make a noise.

is he traumatised in some way???? is it ok??? my gut feeling is that just like the head shaking he was doing a month or so back which he's stopped doing now, it is the novelty of what it feels like and the noise, rather than self-soothing...but i need honest opinions on this please...is it a sign of distress? (just now he did it and was in the middle of playing and giggling with me).

help.

Hi Sophable, my Ds did this aswell at around the same age i think. He woild mainly do it in temper and wouild do it very hard and often bruised his head.
I ended up picking him up and putting him on the sofa when he did it, so he wouldn't hurt himself.
He soon stopped after that as I also paid him no attention.

My ds now likes running his head own my moms floor to ceiling window as he likes the way his head bumbps down the glass.

Your right it's probably just a phase like the head shaking.

my younger brothers (twins) did this as older babies/toddlers - they had wooden cots head to head and used to get up on all fours and bang their heads steadily on the solid head ends - I remember it as going on for ages. The paint on the cots was all worn away.

It didn't seem to do them any harm, or be a sign of any problem; they were then & are now (nearly 40) completely ordinary in a nice sort of way. What I'm trying to say is that sometimes really amazing head-banging is nothing to worry about at all.
