Nearly 3 and still hitting me!!

My DS will be 3 at the end of November, he is quite boisterous and active, but is still hitting me, mainly on my face, not real punches ofcourse! but slaps. I thought he'd understand by now that this behaviour isn't good.I am at the end of my tether in trying
to deal with it and end up shouting at him, which I know is right. I've tried 'naughty step', sad face on sticker chart etc. I think he's doing it for attention or when he's excited, it's hard to tell sometimes. Any advice anyone? Please!!!

What happens when you naughty stair or sad face sticker?
I find that my ds1 responds well to such 'punishment', but if I let it slip, then so does he, iyswim.

He does respond sometimes to both, depending on mood. I think though I'm probably not being as consistent as I should be with him, with naugthy stair and sad face.
Somtimes he just laughs when I put him on the stair, I think he thinks its a game, other times, he's upset and will then realise its not much fun sitting on a stair! So thank you for your comment
