When can baby sit

Hi, apologies if this is in wrong forum.

What is the guidance on at what age can baby sit with support (pillow?) and under supervision . So much confusion after reading different websites.

I don't think you should prop a baby up to sit.

I never worried about mine sitting and never put them to sit and they did it at about 11 months for my first and 9 months my second.

You don't need to worry about this at all

When they are able to sit by themselves. There are play rings which are slightly different and from when they can hold their own weight, but you only use those for short durations: tummy time and time laying on their backs looking/hitting/kicking hanging toys is better :)

I think officially you can start them doing supported sitting from 6 months, although to be honest I did it much earlier with DS2 because he's quite strong whereas DS1 wasn't ready really until 6 months, and I guess other babies might need a bit longer than that - so I guess officially from 6 months but really probably when you feel your baby can do it. Like others have said you don't have to but both mine seemed to enjoy having a different perspective to see the world from and it helped them not to get bored if they could switch between that and tummy time or being on their backs etc

So no high chair until 6 months?

Well I'm basing what I think the official advice is on the instructions on any baby equipment that I have for sitting - my pushchair says lay flat until 6 months, DS1 was given an inflatable ring with toys on for Christmas when he was 5 months that says from 6 months, I tried him in it on Christmas day and he slumped back or forward in it and wasn't really ready to sit in it until he was 6 months. And yes my high chair says for use from 6 months.
Not my personal (unqualified) advice though - my personal advice was to start them sitting when they seem ready

Thanks! Fair point! I had to move him into his pushchair from bassinet at 4 months because he was too long :(

My son began sitting on his own without support at 5 months. He was always very strong though since being a newborn. It used to scare us how strong he was!

Why do you need a high chair before 6 months anyway?

Yes check the WHO and NHS guidelines pretty sure it doesn't say anywhere you should prop your baby to sit.

@noknit I've been advised by a GP to start weaning my son early because of reflux. Not sure I will follow his advice as I'm.not concerned it is a result of allergies but obviously if weaning before 6 monnths a high chair would be imperative, would it not?

I'd never thought about what to do if weaning a baby early before they can sit to be honest. It's probably a silly question as I'm sure you've tried everything - but have you tried infant gaviscon? - I would have thought that would do a better job at thickening the baby's stomach contents than the small amount of solids they'll swallow if they're not otherwise ready for weaning. It was a miracle cure for DS1 for his reflux, but I know it doesn't work for all babies.
Having said all that I weaned DS2 when he was just turned 5 months because he had already been sitting for a couple of weeks and could pick food up from his tray himself and put it in his mouth and chew and swallow it, so I think it depends on the baby when they're ready - so if your baby is ready I don't think you have to wait for 6 months

Yes we have but thanks. Not a silly question at all - it was the first thing we tried actually, back in November (it's been a loooong journey to get to this point!!) - but we are getting there. He can sit fine supported (such as in a high chair) but topples over after a minute or so unsupported- that's why I was asking about the 6 month rule for high chairs. I think we're still going to leave it a few weeks anyway until we wean him, despite doctors advice...
