Headbanging

Our 8 month old has just started to crawl and stand. Now he's more mobile he also seems to have become more unsettled in his cot at night, wakes up starts banging his head against the bars and screaming blue murder.

As he's our PFB, this is a bit worrying!

Should we risk cot bumpers or will he just learn that banging his head is not much fun eventually?

I started a thread about the exact same thing a few years ago!!
I mentioned it to our doctor at the time as my ds was bruising his head and spine from the banging. We were told that it was boredom or being over tired and to just pad the walls of the cot as much as possible.

Ds soon calmed down with it, however, he is now 4 and when he's exhausted, he'll rock himself and bang his head against the wall, albeit far gentler than when he was tiny!

Thanks Womba. I thought that bumpers were considered dodgy these days due to SIDS risk? We think he might be waking up by rolling his head against the bars in his sleep so bumpers would be good for that...

I used one with my ds1 and thought they were brill, they stopped the dummy falling between the bars. Fab.

Gee..i'm not sure about the SIDS risk to be honest but i just wove some thick material through the cot bars, My ds banged that much that his cot would move out into the middle of his bedroom and we worried about him tipping it up.

Good luck with it though!

Mixed opinions from past threads on SIDS. But he is already all-action commando baby so I'm sure he would eventually use a bumper to escape! I think they're a bit twee anyway (but maybe that's just because I'm a Dad).

Maybe we could just line the top of the cot with teddies til he gets bored of bashing his bonce?

i always used a cot bumper with dd and ds as they would hang out the side of the cot otherwise (odd kids) they were great and if you dont tie them too tight they cant climb out over them as they'd just fall down if stepped on!
