Hi there, my son has just started stuttering age 8. Everything I've googled so far (I did so hoping to be reassured) suggests developmental stuttering is common up to about age 5. He's frustrated with it. It's also affecting his reading - up til now he's had a reading age of about age 10. Now he's struggling reading out loud or in his head.
Apparently later than age 5 it can be physical (brain) problems or perhaps due to emotional trauma. He has recently moved schools and has largely been happy but did have an issue with a kid last week that upset him. Could that really cause it? Other things I've read suggest stuttering causes anxiety, not vice versa.
I will try to make a GP appointment but it is quite hard to do around here (and I can only really take him after school on Fridays which also makes it difficult!).
He's had a vocal tic in the past which went away and initially I googled the stuttering thinking I'd be reassured that it was something like that. But I haven't found anything to say this.
Anyone have experience of the onset of stuttering in late childhood?
