When did you child sit unaided?

Amandella · 05/09/2004 20:37

My dd is just over 7 months old and can sit supported with pillows behind her on the floor but when they are taken away, she falls over pretty quickly. Often if she sees the pillow behind her, she just lies back and doesn't seem too interested in sitting up on her own. However, if she sits on my lap, she will sit upright and seems pretty strong. Is this normal? Shouldn't she be sitting up on her own by now or am I being a paranoid mum??
Thanks!!
Amandella

hi, my dd is 7mth and can sit unaided... she used to be exactly as your dd but the more you sit them the better they get...the best thing is you sit behind her but a little away to be ready to catch her, give her a toy to concentrate on i know my dd sat more steady when concentrating, hope this helps (practise makes perfect!!)

This is perfectly normal and my 7.5 month old ds2 is doing exactly the same thing. Over the last few days his strength has increased and I'm sure it will be the sane for your little one. All children develop at their own rates and there's no right or wrong time for them to achieve each little stage. Please don't worry - there's really no need.[hth]
ps my other two were pretty much the same and you should see them now at 6 and 4!

Mine sat completely unaided at 8 months. Within a week he crawled properly (he had been doing so commanod style on his tummy for a couple of months) and pulled himself up to standing and started to cruise. He had obviously been saving them all up. I didn't think at the time that this was at all late. One of my friends baby did it at 6-7 months but was 3 months later walking than my son. They are all so different.

twick · 05/09/2004 21:03

6 months but she started doing just what your dd is doing before she 'went solo'. I think the average is 7-8 months so I'm sure what your dd's doing is absolutely fine.

PicadillyCircus · 05/09/2004 21:06

DS first sat up unsupported when he was 7.5 months. And now he's 9.5 months and crawling everywhere, pulling himself up, causing chaos!

Hulababy · 05/09/2004 21:06

My DD say unaided at 17 weeks, for the week before she kept trying and managed very brief times, until she finally managed to sit for ages on her own. But for ages after I tstill put cushions next to her, in case.

DD is just over 7 months and can sit for a couple of minutes before falling over. She seemed o get the knack of sitting just after we got her a bumbo, but don't know if this is just coincidence or not.

linnet · 05/09/2004 21:14

my dd was the same as Jane313's ds. She sat unaided at 8 months, although she had sat by herself since about 7 months but would often fall backwards if she wasn't concentrating. she also did the commando style crawling until she sat herself then crawled properly and started cruising.
I had no other babies to compare her to so I assumed it was normal, wasn't worried anyway. They are all different.

lydialemon · 05/09/2004 21:15

YG - DD also was sitting by 5 mths and I think our Bumbo helped too. She was desperate to be upright (which is why I bought it!) I think to feel a bit safer when DSs are trampling up and down

Amandella - DD sat early, amother baby I know who is a week older than her, sat a lot later. They are now 10 mths and at pretty the same level - every baby has its own timetable! Don't worry your DD's fine!

californiagirl · 05/09/2004 22:27

I was at a moms and babies yoga class and we had three new sitters side-by-side; all 3 had gotten good at it in the same week. They were 5 months, 6 months, and 9 months. Your 7 month old sounds fine.

Ghosty · 05/09/2004 22:35

Amandella, your DD sounds fine! My DD is the same age as yours (well, she is 7 months and 2 days) and she can sit unaided but can be unpredictable so I still have cushions behind her. I put all her toys in front of her so she has to lean a bit forward to reach them ... I have found that is making her back stronger.
My friend's baby, who is 2 weeks older than my dd, can't sit on her own but rolls every where ... my DD won't roll at all ...

suedonim · 05/09/2004 22:52

Your dd sounds par for the course, Amandella. Three of mine sat up unaided between 7 and 8 mths while one of them sat up at 5mths (and learned to crawl at the same time, grrr!)

Chinchilla · 05/09/2004 22:57

Ds sat up alone at 5.5m, but then didn't roll, crawl, walk or talk until really late! Yours sounds normal, Amandella.

muminlondon · 06/09/2004 16:31

6.5 months for my dd but needed a pillow for about a month. Isn't 6-9 months the average? She walked at 13-14 months which is also nice and average.

blossomhill · 06/09/2004 16:34

ds 8 months and dd 9 months. Both crawled soon after and both walked at roughly 12 - 13 months.
Don't worry all babies are different.

Avalon · 06/09/2004 17:14

My dd1 could only sit supported by pillows etc at 9 months and sit unaided at 10 months. She was a long, heavyish baby and it just seemed to take her longer than other mums' babies. Your dd sounds fine.

fio2 · 06/09/2004 17:17

I think up to 9-10 months is seen as normal, dont worry

handbagaddiction · 06/09/2004 17:57

Sat unaided at around 5.5 months, started bottom shuffling only 3 weeks ago at just over 11 months and is nowhere near walking - only just managing to pull herself up on her knees. Weight on the legs is a definite no-no! Don't worry at all though - I spoke to the doctor at dd's 8 month check and he said they would only get concerned if at just after 10 months a baby was unable to sit unaided.

lou33 · 06/09/2004 18:21

I can only remember when my sn children started sitting, and not the non sn ones. I can remember walking though. Dd1 sat at 9m, ds2 sat relatively securely a couple of months ago aged 3 and a bit.

SoupDragon · 06/09/2004 18:23

Both at around 5 months. But they were almost like bean bag toys and sort of spread out to give themselves stability!!

lou33 · 06/09/2004 18:24

Lol @ that vision Soups!

Amandella · 06/09/2004 20:16

Thanks so much everyone. I feel so much better!! Wow, I never realised what a paranoid mum I was until now!!!

Thanks again!
