S sounds

I was driving us all home from playgroup (mums & tots) today & dd (3.10) was sat in the back with MIL. Dd was telling her nanny that we were going to makes cakes this pm & said we might make star shaped cookies too (OK, not sure where she got that from) anyway, to the point...dd said Tar for Star & MIL said she needs to start practicing/pronouncing her S's...& was getting her to say St, S, s, sh, sp etc, which is OK, I am not bothered at all that she did this.

Dd does say pud (Spud - (our dog)) Tar (Star) Quare (Square) Trek (Shrek), hopbible (Hospital)

But she can say Sam, Say, Silly, Sugar, Stay, Suitable, Rosie, Melissa, Postman quite clearly.

She will say Spud, Shrek, Star if you really work her at it & take time to say "say St, st, st-ar"

This is OK, right? I know all children tend to struggle with some words/letters now & then but MIL pointing it out really made me wonder!

I think at 3 she is too young to diagnose a speech problem as their brains are working really hard to process sooooo much but keep an eye (or should that be ear?) on it.

Thanks Noodle. I was just thinking it was normal toddler behaviour, that she will grow out of it but MIL got me worried.

I know that S sounds can be hard, as it is the formation of the lips/tounge etc.....

She is quite articulate & speaks really nicely, otherwise.

my ds has a speech problem, - having therapy since 3.6, he is now 4.7 he can make the "S" sound but does not put it in front of the words,
if you DD can say all them other words with the S in it then it sounds like the joining of them together will just come in time. Not a problem i would say.

My DD (9) had speech therapy for "S" problems when she was 6/7 and she still lapses when tired and emotional and sounds like a spitting steam train!
