9.5 month old with uneven legs creases - help!

My dd2 has just had her 9 month development review (she is 9.5 months. She still isn't sitting very well unaided, she can manage a few minutes when she wants to. She doesn't roll and is not mobile and will only sit if put in that position - she seems happiest lieing on her back. She half rolls to reach something she wants.

The HV has referred her to a physio because her leg creases are not even. Does anyone have experience of this and what it might mean? The HV seems to think this might explain her delay at sitting. I was feeling less worried as she is seemed better with her sitting but now I'm worrying all over again. She came out well on all the other tests.

Oh FGS - if you don't have any worries, why is the HV winding you up. Sorry but it sounds perfectly normal to me. So she has one leg fatter than the other. Blimey, I have one bum cheek larger than the other!

She will come on in her own sweet time. They are all different

I've no experience of this but bumping it for you. I do have experience of doctors giving me unnecessary worry about my DD however so I know what it's like. I hope someone comes along who can put your mind at ease

Uneven creases can be a sign of hip dysplasia, so your HV is being sensible to refer you.

My 7 month old has uneven creases, and was referred at birth for a hip scan - christywhisty is right. Her scan was borderline, so we're going back in July for a second one - but I know loads of kids who've been checked for this reason and have been fine, no need for further action, hips have sorted themselves out on their own.

If they don't, the problem can be sorted out with a brace (think I'm right about this, but no personal experience) which needs to be worn for a while - but if its left and not addressed, I presume the long term consequences can be more troublesome.

But I think I'm right in saying the odds are that all is well - just wise to get checked out.

thank you for the advice, like you say its best to get these things checked especially if there is something to help now and save her problems in the future. I've got everything crossed its nothing and she does just have one leg fatter than the other! Will the worry never end. I hope the physio appt will come soon. I will resist the temptation to google hip dysplacia.

I hope your lo's scan goes well Elibean. Fingers crossed for you too.

My dd had/has uneven creases, which were picked up by the HV at her 9 month review. I was told to keep an eye on things and if i had any concerns to go to my gp. Because my dd was crawling, sitting well and her legs were the same length, she wasn't overly concerned.

However, because it was playing on my mind, i took her to the doctors anyway, and she said that my dd just had chubby thighs... just like her mother!!

Easy to say but try not to worry, especially as you are feeling more confident about her sitting. Hope the appointment comes through quickly for you and puts your mind at rest x

It's not a huge hassle to get this checked out. My DD has uneven creases and was seen by an orthapaedic specialist when she was about 7 months. It wasn't a big deal at alljust a hip X-ray to check the bone was properly in its socket (it was). We have to go back in a year to check the legs are the same lengththey can't really tell until they're up and walking, apparently.

uneven creases in a baby can be a sign off hip dislocation and your hv is right to refer you now.....it is much easier on the child(and family)to start the treatment earlier rather than later........my dd had a dislocated hip picked up at birth(but her left leg was literally behind her head) and also has a leg length discrepancy.
I would think your dd will have an ultra sound scan and/ or xray.......try not to worry toomuch until your dd is examined..Best wishesxxxx

not much more to add really, just that this is one of the key things they check for at the 6 week check and 8/9 month review.
if the leg creases are uneven it can mean that the leg isn't in the pelvis/hip socket properly and if left to develop like that, it will mean surgery.
HOWEVER, if they pick it up before they start walking/at an early age, then the treatment is easy - just a brace the child wears which positions the leg deeper into the socket so it develops/grows/strengthens like that. At any sign they send you for a check/x-ray as it is so easy to correct at this age.

my DD2 was referred at 6 weeks, we had a hosp appt at 3 months then a follow up scan later. all was fine though.

canarygirl, it is important that this gets checked out, but probably better to referred to the orthopaedic surgeons who specialise in childrens hips, who will run a clinic, see DD2 and arrange an USScan usually on the same day, rather than to see the physio.
Go and see your gp to get a referral about the hips on monday.

My DD (4.9) had uneven creases , picked up at 9 mth check. Went for x-rays, everything was fine. She didn't crawl til 12.5 mths or walk until 16mths (don't know if this was associated) but she is now very agile and sporty. No problem!
