Teething- sore thumb

My 6 month old sucks his thumb to self soothe, but since his bottom teeth have come through he is making his thumb sore. Any recommendations of what I can put on his thumb to help it heal and protect it becoming sore again.

My DN did this and the Dentist told them to introduce a dummy. Apparently, it should help the thumb now and later you can take the dummy away.

Dentists don’t like thumb sucking as it affects the teeth and it can be difficult to get the child to stop
