Toddler taking nappy off - just a new discovery or a sign that I should toilet train?

My 2 year old helpfully took his nappy off, put his pjs back on and then peed on the carpet

Is this just my bad luck that he has discovered he can do this or a sign that I should be thinking about potty training?

Hmm I'm not sure, but my 14 month old learnt how to take her nappy off about 6 weeks ago and she is not ready. She often takes it off then toddles across the room and looks suprised when wee comes out and she slides across the laminate!. Can he talk enough yet to let you know he wants to go?.

He is 2 years 4 mths and has fairly limited speech

My dd has been frantically taking her nappy off since she was 18 months. Driven me mad. When she turned 2 we tried toilet training and it didn't work out at all. She's just started again, 2.3 months and we've just been given the advice to put a potty on the floor. We did this on Thursday and she's great at doing the business in the potty-spot on everytime, but only when she's not wearing clothes. As soon as she's got knickers and trousers on she wees and poos as if she's got a nappy on. Haven't worked out what to do about that yet.

Babyblue, Thats a difficult one, I suppose it is logical for your dd to think that if she's wearing something it's alright to wee in it.

The blonde, Maybe you are just going to have to be patient and see what happens over the next week or so, to see if it's just a new trick or wanting to go the big boys way. You may have to shampoo the carpets though!.

The Blonde- just in case you were wondering my advice would be to just put a potty on the floor and leave him naked (this was the advice I got). If he's ready then he'll attempt the potty (if you tell him what its for).

tbh i would wait and see if he does it again. i know of 2 yo's that just take their nappies off for fun. my ds2 (also 2) has very little language and as much as i would like to train him i am waiting until he has more communication skills. we swapped him to pull us though as they are easy to pull up and down!

Pull ups are a great invention it is true!. I recently read The best friends guide to toddlers by Vicki Iovine who has 4 kids and she said with her first 2 she literally followed them around with a potty and stressed herself out, then with her last 2 she didn't even bother and they were still toilet trained by the same age. It kind of changed my opinion as before reading that I was determined to get on the case with it as soon as dd reached 18 months. I think they just decide to do it when they are ready.
