Having to do every feed at home even at 6 months

Dd hasn't let me hold her for a feed since she was 1 month old, so every feed (7am, 11am, 2.30pm, 5.30pm, 11pm) has to be at home...very annoying when i see other people out in shops feeding their baby (older or younger). Why can't mine be like that? She's such a strange little thing!

my dd2 is 13wks and has been diagnosed with reflux. At 6wks old she was screaming whilst feeding, she is a gaining weight rapidly and is a very smilily baby when not feeding. she was prescribed infant gaviscon which worked for the last six weeks but she has started choking and gagging on her feeds. I stopped the gaviscon and the screaming has stopped but every feed is a battle with the choking and gagging. No advice to give just wanted to say you are not alone. My gp will not prescribe anything other than gaviscon because my dd2 is above average with her weight gain.

hannibo · 26/06/2007 22:13

she also had green smelly but normal looking poo from 3ks to eight maybe nine weeks, for the last few weeks it is slightly green at the begining and the rest yellow and it now smells like baby poo not like a sewer!tmi

I think you may have misread hannibo's post kamikayzed! Her dd2 has been diagnosed with reflux, just she's gaining weight so well he won't prescribe more than gaviscon.
Well i guess that makes the struggle all worthwhile then ?

Btw, went to see my new hv this morning. Never met her before but i like this one
She is coming to see me next week, over a feed so she can see exactly what i mean. Good thing is, i dunno if dd will play up cos she has improved a bit since she was smaller. That might complicate things a bit though. Also she is new to being a hv, so she says she will have to research possible causes, then talk to me about the 'whole picture' which she was cross because nobody else has. Just hoping she can see past the 'babies with reflux do not want to lie down' thing, cos that's all over any medical diagnosis of reflux i've seen yet

Oh, and dh refuses to feed her 'that crap'. I assume he means the wysoy

IKWYM about the weight gain being irrelevant...but you said she shouldn't have been prescribed gaviscon if she hadn't been diagnosed with reflux, so i just pointed out that you seemed to have your wires crossed! I have the annoying habit of correcting people (yes, as well as lack of tact and general bad temperedness - guess i'm just multi-talented )

As for my aims...i guess i do want to get out and about - as much for dds 1 & 2 as for myself. I would like to know if i will ever be able to feed my baby in my arms again because i miss the closeness. I want her not to be in pain, and to eat properly. I think this may be an oppportune time to say that there have been times in the past when i have had to force my dd to drink milk because she's been so hungry but would not drink. There's been times when she's screamed so much while we've tried to feed her that although for her age/size she should have been drinking 6oz feeds, she's had 4oz and thrown it all back up. And that's with a 5 hour gap after thelast feed.

And what is with the coughing/ choking? She still is doing this several times a day.

we have restarted gaviscon due to the return of the possetting which goes on all day and and causes dd2 to be in discomfort and unsettled. she started choking and gagging about a week ago and i have found the only thing that works is to leave her sat in her chair and then go back to her. I am currently in the process of moving house, due to complete and move in the next week but once i have a new doctor (different health authority) i shall be pushing for a referral as i can't bear to see her suffering and like you SIW i feel that i am forcing her to feed even though she wants it iyswim.

SomethingIncrediblyWitty · 27/06/2007 19:39

Thanks so much for that!!! I felt too awful to admit this to the hv...i thought dd would get taken away cos it sounds like child cruelty or something. But i thought it would be more cruel to leave her hungry all the time.

Looked up dysphagia. Does sound familiar! Will have to add to my list of topics to bring up.

Have you actually managed to use variflow teats then? Dd can't seem to get any milk using them . I am now wondering why!

I tried Boots own brand. I couldn't when i tried either, maybe they're one of those things that should be on the 'things that i thought would be good but were rubbish' thread. Or might it be something to do with the dysphagia?

thanks everyone for the advice, i now use dr browns bottles with no2 teats i have tried the no3 teats but they are too fast the milk goes down quickly but she cant be touched for ages and possetts or vomits. i have spent a fortune on teats and bottles as she has wind issues aswell which do seem to be improving, any other bottle and teats cause her to drink too fast, taking in too much air (she sucks soo hard even on her dummy!)so the screaming returns even with the gaviscon. Today after the gaviscon has been reintroduced she is not possetting so much so better in herself, she is such a happy soul but it does bung her up abit and she always poos when feeding so feeding, straining, gagging and choking it is not nice! I have been mulling over variflow teats i believe the avent fit Dr Browns. Good job dh is working away this week he will never know i am experimenting again! .

Hi! This is SIW btw! Changed my name, just a bit

Weeeeeeell...hv came round. About as much help as chocolate fireguard. Says she will talk to me again in a month. Am fed up with the whole thing, actually. Griping at hv aside, she is loving her solids now - and because she isn't needing as much milk i can see this resolving itself (like you said before - i know! You can do the 'i told you so dance' if you like). We are still struggling getting her to eat enough dairy as i'm not sure how to go about it, but hey - nobody said babies were easy!

Thanks for the concern btw.

GodzillasBumcheek · 07/07/2007 13:03

Just in case Kami or anyone checks back on this thread at some point...i am deregistering from MN. No reason other than this - have discovered that using my pc for more than an hour a day is giving me massive whopping migraines

Bye, thanks for all the help, and especially thanks for listening.

trixymalixy · 07/07/2007 13:40

This sounds very like my DS.

He is bf and refuses to feed unless he is lying completely flat.

I have great difficulty feeding him when we are out and about as he refuses to feed for more than a couple of minutes if I hold him in my arms to feed.

I have given up on bfing in public and feed him EBM in a bottle. He still shrieks and is very fussy but at least when people look at us they don't get an eyeful of my nipples.

Kami, my DS spent is 5 months and spent 6 weeks on gaviscon with absolutely no effect.

I asked my GP if we could try something different and the response I got was " Well Mrs your baby is clearly thriving so it's a minor inconvenience that he will grow out of and I would prefer to continue with the current course of treatment" I was!!!

Every so often I consider giving up bfing when we have a bad day, but my aim is to get to 6 months and then possibly introduce some formula. I really wish I didn't find the bfing such a struggle as I don't particularly want to give him formula.
