Help! 4 year old having problems at school

My loving bright 4 year old who was doing OK at school (despite being a bit scared of the “bigger boys’ - all Reception but my boy is tiny and the youngest) was absent for two and a half weeks with this horrible flu thing that was going around. He’s stlll not 100% but the doctor has cleared him for going into school.

Yesterday was his first day back. They tell me he is like a diferent child - he didn’t want to do anything, wouldn’t eat lunch, purposely pushed another boy (he's never done anything like that before) and then refused to apologise.

I realise he is probably still feeling unwell but he’s bright enough at home.

Any advice how to handle this (hopefully temporary) phase? He was so upset at home last night because he’d been “naughty” (his word). And he was in a bad temper this morning went he went in so maybe he has had another bad day.

Help please!

Not much help but 2 and a half weeks is quite a long time for a four year old. 2 and a half weeks of being off school, not in a school routine etc then going back to it has probably unsettled him. Obviously this couldn’t be helped as he’s been poorly. You say he’s one of the younger in the year group? 4 is still so tiny to be expected to be perfectly behaved all the time at school. IMO anyway!

My son is 7 and the schools holidays and being off often throws him out. So it could well be him just getting into the swing of things again!
