Mitten wars - how do you ensure victory?!

-3 degrees today. And the mitten wars continue. DD (16 months) refuses to keep her mittens on.

She’ll pull them off. I’ll stop the stroller, take my gloves off, put hers back on saying “no, don’t take your mittens off. It’s cold. Your mittens need to stay on. Look: I’m putting mine back on too”. Then not 30 seconds later, it’s a repeat. I try not to react in a way that would make it a game, but she’s still giggling like a maniac and wiggling her fingers squealing “no, no, no!” Like it’s the most fun thing on earth. I try to vary the intervals at which I stop to put the mitts back on, but that doesn’t take the fun out of it.

What am I doing wrong? How do you prevent your little one’s fingers from freezing? It’s only going to get colder... I need tips please!!!

Following with interest. My 19 month old goes apeshit when I try to put mittens on him. Have never managed it.

Ha! I’m glad I’m not the only one, Bip! I hope someone comes along with suggestions.

Just leave the sleeves down instead and don’t worry about the mittens. Although when it went really cold last year I pulled my sons sleeves down passed the end of his fingers and then put socks over the “stumps” - no physical way he could pull them off and stopped cold air blowing up Grin

Good idea! ...except that I tried pulling her sleeves down over her hands and she kept on shaking her arms until her hands re-emerged! This is one determined little bugger we’re talking about...

Have you thought about maybe sewing some elastic onto the mittens and then threading it through the inside of the coat? Make the elastic just long enough for their hands to get into the mittens.

I was going to suggest the old fashioned remedy of mittens on strings, @ETanny - great minds!
