Comfort blankets, pre empting wearing out..

dd 21 mths has had certain blanket "fluffy" since 4 mths, I see it now getting frayed, it smells bad and disintegrates each time it gets washed.
Seeing lots of threads on the loss of a certain comfort toy, I wonder should i sew half of this "fluffy" onto some more robust blanket etc?
dd is a thumb sucker, so am unsure as to how long this fad may last, I expect much longer than aforementioned fluffy rug.
How did you all cope?

Can't really help, but DS is now almost 3 and shows no signs of giving up his comfort cloth. Luckily he is attached to those muslin nappies of which I have heaps and can rotate around! Neighbour's son is 5 and still likes his comfort babygro! Can you buy a new one (or two) and try and substitute?

I was told by a friend that if I introduced a comfort cloth/toy, the best thing was to give a muslin square and the trick was to rotate it weekly so that DD got used to the clean smell. It also meant that if one was lost/left behind somewhere, it could be replaced easily.
Started off with that but bought a "Cuski" (?) from Daily & Tom which is a terry towelling long thing (looks like a ghost)with a head and long hat but no face and DD loves it. Loves the silky label too. While I agree that it is safer for a child not to get attached to something, at least if we don't take it out and it is only to be used at bedtime she will not lose it. Also, being of terry towelling material we won't have the fraying problem.
Re: what to do with fluffy, it needs stablising and maybe sewing it to a muslin square would help?

you must have seen my "please look at this" thread piff! I would certainly have a go at halfing this fluffy, and if you can get a new one I would do that too. There is no replacement in the shops for ds comfort toy but we bought two spares as soon as dd found her special teddy!
