I took my 18 month son to soft play the other day and spent 20 minutes looking at my phone (obviously looking up to check him). I was dealing with work stuff: by subjecting him to 20 minutes of “neglect” I was able to not go in to the office and spent loads more interactive time with my son throughout the day. In fact I’m on my phone now while my son finishes eating his tea.
I really don’t think that 50 years ago mums spent all their waking time staring loving in to their children’s eyes. For one thing they had too many children to do that and also most of them kicked the kids out in to the street/garden while they did the cleaning.
It’s a well written article but sadly just a bit more of the mum bashing that modern-mums are being subjected too. Although I 1000% agree that iPads shouldn’t be integrated in to cots: but that’s a whole other issue and separate to a mum using a phone when she is with her children.
Now if you started talking about world facing prams then you would be on to something: that’s been a change that’s definitely for the worse but doesn’t seem to get as much publicity as the mum-bashing phone use arguments.
Just my opinion, I will probably get shot down in flames for it
