Hi there. Don't know if this is the best place to post this....

I'd really appreciate advice on when is the right time to move my ds (who is 16 months old) from his cot to a bed? When did any of you do it?

Thanks in advance!

Personally I think you shouldn't move them unless you have to eg. if they are climbing out of the cot, too big for it or you desperately need the cot for another baby etc

DS was about 2.8 when we moved him, quite late by some standards but he was sleeping well in his cot so I certainly wasn't going to spoil that!

It just so happened that we went away on holiday where he slept in a bed with a bed-guard so when we came home it seemed logical to move him into his bed then

sorry, meant to ask how your son is sleeping now? do you want to move him soon?

I wouldn't know what is right for your child but if my experience will help, here goes:
I have had 4 children and moved them at the following times:

ds1 at 20 months so that ds2 could have cot - seemed too young to me but we had to do it as ds2 had outgrown carry cot. The only problem was ds1 fell out a couple of times, but then, they all fall out of bed occasionally.

ds2 was 2. He was ready for it, no problems.

dd was 2.3. She was ready for it, no problems.

ds3 was 3.1 Pure laziness on our part meant we did not do it earlier. He didn't resist going into a bed, but he did keep asking for his cot to be put back up for some months!

we moved ds shortly before his 2nd bday

(well, didn't actually move him, just took sides off cotbed)

hadn't planned to do it so soon but he'd started to tip himself precariously over the bars

so we took sides off and took him out of his sleeping bag all at once

went fine - he mostly stays in bed. only prob was that he fell out a few times. we started off with pillows on the flor but have now added a bedguard

good luck

Moved ds when he was able to climb out of cot. This was just before he was 2 I think
He had a bed guard and a mattress (travel cot) mattress against the wall.
The transition went well
after about 3 months I then took the bed side off - again no problems

Good luck and I would just wait - he will let you now!

my ds2 was moved at about 2.6 as he was climbing over the bars. the best advice i can give you is wait as long as possible. When he was in a cot he always slept 12 hours straight - or if he didnt i never knew about it! since being in a bed he has become a nightmare - wandering in our room at all hours - the thing is i am so knackered that often i dont even hear him come in - just find him asleep on the floor in the morning!it reallt worries me that he might wander downstairs and do something dangerous.

Thanks for all your helpful advice!

Not in any rush to move ds as he is (mostly!) sleeping OK. Just had no idea when to make this transition and have ds2 due in 3 months - didn't want to make transition at same time so was thinking to either do before he arrives or after once ds1 is a bit more settled....

Think I will follow advice to wait as long as possible! Thanks!
