Concerns about speech

My DD is 23months old and only says about 5 words! We talk to her constantly and offer support and encouragement but it doesn’t seem to be working Sad I wasn’t aware how odd it was until our first trip to a toddler group and even the younger kids had much more words than her!! She mostly says Gaga (it’s what we call her grannies) and aye, and sometimes says yeah, baba, daddy and mum. But that’s it Confused she can understand some commands like ‘ta to mum’ and ‘get down from there please’. She seems to get frustrated as well about her lack of communication abilities Sad. Should I be worried? My HV has disappeared and I haven’t herd from her in over a year and don’t know how to contact her Sad. Any advice would be greatly appreciated xx

Your HV should do a 2yr review once she’s turned two, it maybe worth bringing up your concerns with her when she comes round.

I am in the same boat ish with my son and he’s 2 in November, he understand more than he can say, but I feel there’s been a massive step back in talking. As things he used to say he has now stopped saying (not completely but partially) and I think that’s what’s causing me most concern. For example 6-12 months ago he was going around saying ‘what’s that?’, ‘whose that?’, ‘why that?’ Just randomly and wasn’t completely clear but I understood it, however in the last 5 months he has only used single word and never questioned anything.

However over the past few nights he’s learnt how to say new words like teeth, bath and din dins. They are all words we say to him on a daily basis though so I do kind of feel like there’s been a step forward a little as he is continuing to expand his vocabulary even if it’s one word at a time. Maybe I expect too much of him... I don’t know
