Baby Straining & Going To Sleep During Feeds

Hi Everyone

Sorry I’m sure these are easy answers for some, but I’m a new dad and looking for some advice.

My 6 week old boy looks like he wants a poo by straining when having a feed. He’s not pooed as much, so gave 2oz boiled water which got things moving; he did a big poo. Is this normal for babies & any recommendations.

Also when he’s having a feed, he falls asleep; he may take 1;2:3 Oz’s, do I try wake him or just let him sleep.

Thanks

Az

Sounds like he was little constipated by the sounds of it. You did the right thing by giving him a little water. I hear constipation is quite common with formula fed babies, so if this is the case, there's no major concern there.

In regards to falling asleep during feeds, do you mean he feels to sleep before he's finished feeding? Most babies can still drink in their sleep so I'd try to continue feeding him. He might stop for breaks and pick it up again. Maybe try that. If he continuously falls asleep during feeding, I would speak to your health visitor.
