Just wondered what your thoughts were, I have never had mine done, and want to have an answer when my DDs ask this question!

I had to wait until I was 12 to get my ears pierced. That was 22 years ago. A girl across the road has just had hers done and she's 9.

ktmoomoo · 04/06/2007 21:00

we have told dd not till she 11 or 12 and ds NEVER lol

Judy1234 · 04/06/2007 21:01

I never had mine done. SOme cultures do it young - Indian I think and some classes in the UK do it younger than others and some types of schools prohibit it.

christywhisty · 04/06/2007 21:03

Had mine done when I was 13. DD 9 will probably have hers done this summer as an early birthday present, so they get a chance to heal over summer holidays.

Lovecat · 04/06/2007 21:04

My mum said we could have them done when we could pay for it ourselves, she wasn't going to subsidise our 'self-mutilation'...

NB, we only got 10p pocket money a week (the 70's), so she knew damn well we couldn't afford it! I had to wait til I was 17 and working!

My niece had hers done for her 10th birthday and it looked so horrible... but she was so happy...

If the OH has her way dd will never get hers done!

Hulababy · 04/06/2007 21:08

The very earliest DD will be allowed is in the summer between primary and secondary, age 11. I suspect even then I will be reluctant to give in though so it is likely to be later than that - more like 13.

I hate earrings on boys full stop, so my answer to that would be never!

pointydog · 04/06/2007 21:12

Dd1 was going to get hers done for her 10th birthday but then chickened out.

Neither of my dds wanted it done young. Such sensible cowardly girls.

MaureenMLove · 04/06/2007 21:14

dd asked for a while when she was about 6 or 7 and I told her not until she was between junior and secondary school, i.e. 11. She is now almost at the end of year 6 and has decided that she doesn't want them pierced at all! Job done!

Rachmumoftwo · 04/06/2007 21:30

I will probably be lynched now, but both mine had theirs done on their 4th birthdays. I had mine done young, and I think as long as they wear small studs it can look lovely.
I always said they could have them done when they were old enough to ask, expecting them to be about 9. DD1 started asking as soon as she could string a sentence together! And DD2 has to have the same treatment in the name of fairness.

cherrycake · 04/06/2007 21:32

All interesting answers!! Am secretly hoping they never ask, but am not so niave! Have low pain threshold myself so it was never for me!

I'm going to pierce my DD ears in November when we go and visit in South Africa. DD will be 1year and 7 months.

If I have a boy one day he will not be allowed to pierce his ears. In our culture it is classed as common.

Rachmumoftwo · 04/06/2007 21:36

I took them to Claires as they do both ears at the same time. The only person who even so much as flinched was me! They get an ear cleaning solution, a six week check & a lollipop as part of the deal!

auburnmum · 04/06/2007 21:41

I wanted mine done since age 5, mum wanted me to wait til 16. Finally agreed at 15 that I looked 16 so had it done then. It was happiest day of my life to that point (glad to say life has improved since then somewhat!). I will allow DD for secondary shool. DS NEVER. Hate that look.

MerryMarigold · 04/06/2007 21:44

I was 11 when I was allowed. (Originally 16, but my Mum caved in and it was my 11th birthday present). I got them done again - without parental consent - when I was 16!

I would say it is ok to have them pierced at 9 or 10, but no dangly or hoop earrings (too tarty) till much older.

purpleduck · 04/06/2007 22:26

I got mine done at 6 (my mom and sister got theirs done at the same time - one of the few times we did something "fun" together"!! I am not keen for dd to get hers done anytime soon, but in the grand scheme of things.... If my son wanted it done, i think i would feel happy its just his ear, and not his nipple/lip/big holethingy's in ear/ or heaven forbid-a PA!!! A regular small hole in the ear seems quite tame compared to what he could do.. I really hope he has better taste though!!!
