9 month old DD not sitting

DD is now 9 months and shows no signs of wanting to sit. When I put her in the sitting position she is able to stay upright for a few senconds and then loses her balance bending over for a toy or throwing herself backwards and then turning onto her stomach. She loves loves being on her tummy & is desperate to crawl but has not yet figured out how to propel her body. Arms and legs are constantly moving though.

A friend saud her DS was sitting at 7 mo and that that is now the norm.

Should I be concerned?

Dd1 didn't sit until she was 10.5 months, and she's fine.

I can't even remember when ds sat up, think it was around 10 months when he was doing it unaided, he would have cushions around him up until then and I would regulary 'rescue' him! I really wouldn't worry - there is no 'norm' for any stage of development.

sounds completely fine. DS1 didn't sit until 8.5 months then walked at 10 months! They are all different.
Not sure what your friend means by 7 months is 'now the norm'.

paulaplumpbottom · 04/06/2007 20:40

I wouldn't worry they all do these things in their own time

They do things in their own time (unless there is an underlying "problem", which it sounds like your dd doesn't have).

Your friend is way off the mark....

If you are worried though, it maybe worthwhile speaking to your GP / health visitor. I am getting my DS2 checked out for "delays" and we saw the neurologist today. He told me that there is a big range for the developmental milestones, and not to worry!

Thanks, it just helps to know that others have done the same and have turned out just fine ( it seems like all her friends have been sitting at least a month). My friends baby has been sitting since he was 7 months so maybe that is why she thinks this. I love DD to bits, sitting or not!

mm22, great to hear that the neurologist has put your mind at rest.

my ds is 9 months and has only just started sitting unaided (although he always has several cushions just in case)

Just to update...

Went to see a crainial osteopath today (she was brilliant). The season why she thinks DD is not able to sit unaided yet is because she lacks the muscle in both her legs (muscle tone is fine). She is very petit and is only just on the 0.4 centile. Its like a weight has been lifted and know I know once that muscle is built up DD will be ok with sitting.
