Car journey meltdowns

I'm a mum of one, my little boy is 5 and a half months old, we regularly go on car journey not long ones but about an hour or so to see family and friends because I recently moved house. Usually this is how it goes, he is fine in his car seat playing with his toys but after a little while he begins to cry and scream, to the point he is getting him self into a right state, once he sees me he is happy again. I was just wondering if anyone else is going through this with their little one and if anyone has any tips or toys I can give him to help comfort him through our car journeys?

For a bit of content we have a mirror for him and us in back on his car seat, he also has a Lamaze octopus, Jellycat Jungle tails book and also his favourite teether attached to his car seat, when me or my partner sit in the back with him he is all happiness and light but he does grab onto your finger and hold it for most of the journey..for comfort I think.

Following! Mine is 8 months... was like this up until 5 months then was more relaxed but still have the odd meltdown. But see doesn't sleep. Some babies are just like it am afraid....

My DD was the same when she hit about 6 months. Now I have a 6 month old son and he has just started this car melt down phase. Can't remember how long it lasts though

Could the car seat be a little small? Can the harnesses or padding be adjusted? We had a Joie travel system seat from newborn, and we tried everything we could to make our DS more comfortable, adjusting the padding etc as much as we could with it still being safe.

Eventually we moved him onto a 360 spin seat which he can sit slightly more upright in and it's made a world of difference. He seemed to be just a bit squished in the smaller one.
