Imitating speech

When they talk about baby imitating you. Does it mean straight after you've made the sound or guesture or does it mean picking up on things you've been doing/noises you've been making in front of them for a while?
My 10 month old won't so something right away but he'll do something great if we practice for about a week, such as clapping but the only noises he will imitate are 'boo' after we've been playing peekaboo or raspberries, if I make his. Baba or dada noises at him I don't get anything back. Is this normal or the sign of something abnormal in his development?

@DianaSun you seem to be resurrecting quite a few old threads. You might be better starting your own thread stating what's concerning you about your LO.
