How much sleep does your 3 year old get?

I'm curious to know how much sleep your 3 year olds get as my ds seems to complain he is tired regularly during the day but will not nap for me. He does sleep well at night which usually means sleeping 7.30pm-6.30am undisturbed. He is 3.5 years old so I'm keen to try and get to the bottom of the problem before he starts school in just over a year.

Dd is nearly 4 and my answer to your questions is not enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She sleeps 10-11 hours per night but would be much happier/better behaved if it were nearer 12 but she is useless at getting to sleep.

Mercy · 01/06/2007 20:34

It's quite normal for a 3.5 year old not to nap in the day - at least not on a regular basis.

My ds is 3.3 and sleeps 10-11 hours at night and has a long nap about once a fortnight now.

Don't worry, once they start full time school you'll be dragging them out of bed each morning!

MrsBond · 01/06/2007 20:36

my DD 3yrs sleeps 7pm - 7 am. No Nap - wakes up in hideous mood if she sleeps in the day!

Elibean · 01/06/2007 21:23

dd 3.5 sleeps about 11 hrs per night, no naps unless ill or on long car journey.

And she also gets tired during the day - but she bounces back if she rests a bit/watches a DVD/reads a book.

kbaby · 01/06/2007 21:54

my 3 yr old gave up day time naps at 18 months.

She goes to bed at 8pm but reads/plays until 9pm then wakes at 7.30am ish

harrisey · 02/06/2007 01:17

My dd2 is 3y7m She sleeps 7.30 pm - 6am or so (sometimes 7 if we are VERY lucky), and for about 30-45 mins after lunch. When I tried cutting that sleep out she didnt go an longer at night but was unmanageable till teatime.

My dd1 slept in the day until she was 4. Ds stopped at 18 months. I've just gone with the flow with each of them.

harrisey · 02/06/2007 01:18

Also my dd will say 'my tired' (hasnt got to grips with "i" yet!!!) when she means 'i want a cuddle' or 'pay me some attention'. Its just a phrase, she's not actually tired!!

colinandcaitlinsmommy · 02/06/2007 04:29

Mine goes to bed at 8, and then after his story with daddy plays until 8:30ish. Wakes up about 6:30. He takes a nap about every 3rd day or so, but if he's tired on a day I don't give him a nap, he often goes to the couch with a book and falls asleep for a bit.

twentypence · 02/06/2007 05:27

He slept 7pm to 7am at 3.5. Does his tiredness coincide with something he doesn't want to do?

Does he get enough exercise - I feel lethargic and tired if I don't do anything - but a brisk walk perks me up.

GlassSlipper · 02/06/2007 07:55

8.00pm to 6.30am. No naps in day except for about 1 x a week and then bedtime is a nightmare.

lyrabelacqua · 02/06/2007 08:05

DS2 is three this month and he has a one-hour nap in the day and at night sleeps from 8ish till 6.30ish.

aDad · 02/06/2007 08:12

7pm to 6.45am. No nap.

Terrible sleeper until the age of 3, now pretty good.

belgo · 02/06/2007 08:13

dd1 has 10 or 11 hours a night, no day time nap.

ProfYaffle · 02/06/2007 08:15

same as belgo. dd1 is 3.1

ghosty · 02/06/2007 08:20

DD, 3yrs 4mths ... sleeps between 11 and 12 hours a night. Hasn't napped on a daily basis since 2 and a half, but she dropped the nap slowly until they fizzled out.
When she says she is tired I encourage her to go to bed ... she goes, sometimes for 30 seconds ("I had a lufly sleep mummy"), sometimes, about once a fortnight, she will fall asleep for a couple of hours, especially if she is brewing a cold or something.

Pixiefish · 02/06/2007 08:20

Dd sleeps from about 8.30 till about 8. No daytime nap but if she falls asleep in the car during the day I have hell for a couple of nights and she will not go to sleep at night and will still be up at gone midnight- argh

schneebly · 02/06/2007 08:27

no nap in the day and 10-11 hours per night. He occasionally still falls asleep in the car though.

Seona1973 · 02/06/2007 09:19

my 3.7 year old dd hasnt had day naps since she was 3 apart from the odd occasion in the car at the weekend after swimming. she sleeps from 7.30/8ish till 6.45/7am. She also says she is tired during the day but not sure if she just copies me really!! (have a 8 month old ds who was waking at night/early morning)

p.s. my sister's 4 year old ds still naps most days - he takes himself to bed when he is tired or falls asleep on her couch.

boomie · 02/06/2007 09:23

DD2 is nearly 3 and sleeps from 7pm to 7:30am. She has just given up her daytime nap and seems to be coping with it OK in the day. She does get a little bit tired in the afternoon but doesn't get niggly, just yawns a lot!

mumtoone · 02/06/2007 21:04

It sounds like my ds is getting a similar amount of sleep to others. He also does still nap at nursery and that nap can last up to 1hr 45mins. When he says he's tired I think it is sometimes an excuse not to do something eg. get dressed, eat dinner etc. I'm just getting fed up with hearing "I'm tired" countless times a day!

My dts are 3.6, they grew out of day nas around a year ago, they now sleep 12 -13 hours a night

expatinscotland · 02/06/2007 21:17

8PM-10AM undisturbed.

She has always been a star sleeper but she does have dyspraxia and tires easily.

lizziemun · 02/06/2007 21:24

DD is 3.6 goes to bed between 7pm and 7.30pm depending on when DH get in.

She wakes between 6.30 and 7.30am she sleeps through. She well read (look) at her books if it early.

She will still have a sleep for 2 hours in an afternoon 2 or 3 times a week.

I do find sometimes when she is tired in the afternoon and won't go to sleep i put her in her room and tell her to look at her books in bed and when i go back after about 10 mins she is a sleep.
