Really silly 5 year old

My 5 year old exhibits really silly behaviour that he struggles to snap out of. Currently on time out and he is singing “mummy it’s poo” over and over again and has been doing for a couple of minutes. It’s not uncommon for him to have uncontrollable laughter while saying ridiculous things or making stupid noises.

Anyone noticed anything similar with their children or have any strategies? School have not raised any concerns after a year so I don’t know whether to be concerned or not

We had problems with DD talking whilst in time out and generally trying to escalate the situation. We’ve had lots of chats about trying hard not to make things worse and now have a rule of being quite in time out. If she sings or talks, time out starts again.

That’s interesting. Do you time the time out?

Do you time the time out?. Yes we have. I know that time out isn’t very popular on MN but we use a minute for every year of life so a 5 year old gets 5 minutes. We explain very calmly, and get down to their level to do it, exactly why they are in time out.
