17 month old throwing everything - please help

He's throwing toys down the stairs, his beaker, and platefuls of food, I tell him no really firmly but he just laughs - I know it's silly but I'm at the end of my tether with this - he throws with real force, and hit me in the face with his beaker yesterday, cutting my lip. I really need to put a stop to this but how do I do it when he just laughs if I tell him off.

Have you tried using a sort of time out with him? Not in a seperate room, but maybe sitting him on the bottom step, or on a chair? Does he talk? Is he able to say sorry?

He can only say 'no' and a couple of other short words clearly which is is his answer to everything at the moment! I couldn't get him to sit still for a minute on a chair/step but I could put him in his playpen - would you do this during his meal then put him back in his highchair and carry on, also how many times would you let him throw the food before you took it away for good

When he does it, take everything out of his reach, especially his toys. After a while, allow him one toy but if he throws it, take it away again and tell he can only have it back if he plays with it nicely and doesn't throw.Or if he does it at the table with his beaker, put him away from the table and stand/sit him on his own and tell him he must be on his own until he be nice and not throw. Tell him he can come back and join in when he can be a good boy and not throw.It worked for my DS. He hates being removed from the situation.

I used to use the 'three strikes and your out' rule with my charges, and it worked wonders. I would suggest if he throws food more than 3 times, then lunch/tea is over! Take the food away, take him out of the highchair, and tell him that he can't have anything else because he was throwing. You might only have to do this a couple of times, before he starts to get the idea. If you're worried about him going to bed hungry, then maybe leave it a while then offer him a piece of fruit or extra milk. The last thing you need is to be woken at 2am by a hungry toddler . Also, take away whatever he throws, out of reach and out of sight!

No advice, but sympathy. My nearly 16 month old is, and always has been, the same. Nothing we've tried has worked, so we're hoping it's just a phase that she'll grow out of once she finds better ways of communicating.

Hmm, I assume once food is being thrown around the meal is over, but it's easier if they're generally good eaters.

much sympathy DS does this too but I don;t let him have his plate of food - I sit next to him and hold it. He geneally only starts to throw food as he gets full so its not too big a problem to take it away from him if he starts throwing.

Don't worry if he laughs or ignores you, keep saying no and taking it away if he persists. The message will get through eventually.
