my friends dd is 8 months old and almost sitting. i told her to get one of those v cushion thingys or playnests to help support her but she thinks this will hinder her learning to crawl (which she is also trying to do)

now my ds is sitting and gets into crawling position from sitting (he hates lying on the floor) but would a baby who is not quite sitting be able to do this?

she's very much like me in the way that i don't believe in strapping them in chairs and swings etc cos how are they going to learn to move around if they are trapped in a chair.

No.

DD2 never crawled at all. She bum shuffled, then walked.

PrettyCandles · 24/05/2007 15:40

All three of mine learned to crawl first, and then learned to sit thselves up from crawling position (by walking their hands backwards).

my ds (9 months today)crawled before sitting. he started by shuffling on his tummy commando style across the floor, then began to get up on hands and knees. now he crawls a lot and has just strated sitting proplerly (and standing) in the last few weeks

BigHotMama · 24/05/2007 15:42

Hiya Nappy, how you and Toby doing hun?

My ds sat up before crawling, but all babas are different. I think the cushion is a great idea, I had one but didnt use it until somebody at playgroup showed me how.

Hi Nappyaddict
I really don't think supporting the baby while sitting will hinder crawling if she wants to crawl. Babies developement really varies at this stage with some missing out crawling all together!
My DS1 didn't sit up til he was nearly nine months then went straight to pulling himself up, cruising and walking by 10 months.
DS2 sat at six months (with support and then without) and was a real crawler until he walked.

BigHotMama · 24/05/2007 15:45

Is a playnest like a doughnut inflatable thingy? Ds loved his and learned how to pull himself up really quickly and fall out head first.

nappyaddict · 24/05/2007 15:47

yeh the doughnut thingys. wow is he pulling up and standing already!

Yes we cant believe it either, he did it all of a sudden just few weeks after crawling. He's into everything I'm knackered

nappyaddict · 24/05/2007 15:51

aww bless him is he cruising and that? ds started to a few weeks ago.

No, it did not stop both of mine crawling when they were ready.

BigHotMama · 24/05/2007 15:58

Yeah cruises on anything he can get his hands on really, sometimes gets stucks and just starts shouting, he's had a few bumps too . Its hard to believe how quickly they seem to grow up, they're almost toddlers now .

nappyaddict · 24/05/2007 16:23

hebetalbot, so before they could sit up properly if put in a sitting position supported by a playnest could get out of sitting position and continue crawling (and over the nest i presume)

just need to check i've got this right cos i'm going to print it out and show her that she can definitely get one without worrying.

If I remember correctly son was actually walking before he could get himself into sitting position. He couod support himself if you sat him down but couldn't get there himself
He never crawled properly just did the comando type crawl ,dragging himself then pulled himself up on the furniture and walked at 10 months.

nappyaddict · 24/05/2007 16:35

that's what i mean by sitting. supporting themselves if you sit them down, not able to get into it from lying.

My elder 3 kids all crawled long before they could sit up unaided. DS2 crawled (backwards) at 4 months! DD1 also walked around the furniture long before she sat up. All of them slept on their fronts.

DS3- who slept on his back- didn't sit until he was 9 months and crawled after that.

nappyaddict · 24/05/2007 16:47

actually thinking about it a playnest might be pretty useless for a baby who can already crawl. wouldn't they just get into crawling position and crawl over it?
